WILTON LACROSSE ASSOCIATION UPDATE:                             November 2014

Dear Wilton Lacrosse Families:

This is our first newsletter, what will be a quarterly. The purpose of the newsletter is to give you a brief update on lacrosse in Wilton – High School boys and girls, as well as youth boys and girls.  We hope the communication is helpful.

This fall the Wilton Lacrosse Association has been working to improve the lacrosse experience in our town.  On the youth side we now have curriculum directors for both the boys and the girls (Taylor Nissi and Emily Mason). We are confident their passion for the game will be a big asset to our youth players. In an effort to get our young Warriors on the lacrosse field, the WLA hosted its annual First Grade Free Stick event. The WLA provides free Brine Lacrosse sticks to first grade boys and girls interested to begin participating in the game of lacrosse.  Nearly 100 first grade boys and girls attended the session and received instruction from John Wiseman and Emily Mason from our high school varsity programs, as well as numerous varsity players from both the boys & girls teams.  Despite the uncooperative inclement weather, the session was a resounding success and we are pleased to welcome the new first graders into the Wilton Lacrosse program and family.

This winter we will again host our Kickoff Cocktail Party at Rolling Hills.  Specific details will be coming but be sure to save the date of Friday, March 13th.  This event is a great night for our lacrosse community and our key fundraiser for the year.

Going into the 2015 season the WLA’s focus will be player development and player experience.

BOYS High School LAX Update:

Events and Programs

A number of different groups have contributed to organization of off-seasons programs for high school boys. The goal of all these programs is to provide as many lacrosse skill-building activities for out-of-season athletes and others interested in further developing their skills. The diversity of offering provides opportunities for freshman through seniors.

Another critical aspect of the WLA High School Program is the work done by the Boys High School committee, made up of parent volunteers, who support various WLA activities that support the high school teams like roster cards, team apparel, infrastructure improvements, video, fund raising, season opening get-togethers, senior night, and the end of season banquet. The many ways the WLA supports the 3 high school teams takes many hands. The first meeting of the WLA boys high school committee was in November with more to follow.  All volunteers welcome.

Spring Season for HS Boys Lax begins March 23, 2015

GIRLS High School LAX Update:

The High School Girls lacrosse program is coming off a great 2014 season.  The varsity Warriors finished with a 13-3 regular season record and ended up 19-4 through the playoffs. The team won the Connecticut Class ‘M’ State Championship by defeating New Canaan in overtime and was an FCIAC Tournament Finalist.  Head Coach Meredith Meyran was elected the Connecticut Class M Coach of the Year.  While recognizing the loss of a very strong 2014 senior class, Coach Meyran is excited about the 2015 season and the future of the program as she returns many experienced upperclassmen and has talented younger players coming through the pipeline.

Events and Programs:

The WLA is once again hosting its Annual Girls HS Play Day on Saturday March 28, 2015 at Wilton HS.  Some of the finest HS girls lacrosse programs in the Northeast will be attending the Wilton Play Day and competing in exhibition games.

The WLA Girls HS Lax Committee will also be organizing many other events for the program, including a ‘First Draw’ event (season kickoff) for all 3 teams, senior night and the end-of-season banquet.

The WLA and the current and former HS girls will be holding the 2nd Annual “Warrior to Warrior” clinic for the Wilton girls youth players over Thanksgiving weekend.  This is a fundraiser for the HS girls program.  More information and registration can be found online on the Wilton Lacrosse website.

Finally, stay tuned for announcements on the HS girls winter and pre-season lax and conditioning programs.  Freshman should contact one of this year’s varsity captains (Makenna Pearsall or Casey Tucker) so they can be added to the Wilton HS Girls Lax Facebook page.

Spring Season for HS Girls LAX begins March 23, 2015.

BOYS Youth LAX Update:

As 2014 shifts into 2015, boy’s youth lacrosse looks to build on our past success and also implement some new tools, while looking to improve a few aspects of our program.

Events and Programs:

This past fall, after school programs were offered for players in Kindergarten up to 5th grade. This program had excellent turnout in the first year.  WLA looks forward the continuance of the after school program and the introduction of new players to the sport each fall. Additionally, the Sunday skill clinics also had a great turnout. Players who attended the Sunday sessions enjoyed the bounce back walls purchased by the WLA, and we hope to see players continue to use the walls as the season approaches.

For the 2014-2015 holiday season, WLA piloted a new program. We partnered with New Canaan Youth Lacrosse to run a joint clinic. We kicked off that program and the boys are benefiting from both our talented coaches and coaches from New Canaan. Through this program, we also hope to develop leadership and camaraderie both in our program and with the NC lacrosse players. After the New Year we are going to be offering a number of player development clinics as we continue to focus on providing as many opportunities for our players to improve in the offseason as possible.

The winter season will also kick off our coach’s development and training. WLA is very fortunate to have a number of quality coaches returning for another season. In providing the backbone of our youth program, coaches undergo comprehensive training which includes both on the field development and classroom sessions. Through these sessions, WLA ensures that our program is both consistent and utilizes the best resources to enable our coaches to not only develop players, but to build a positive experience within our program. If parents are interested in volunteering or getting involved at the younger levels, we can always use the support and additional coaches at 4th grade and under.

GIRLS Youth LAX Update:

With fall now upon us, we are actively at work on numerous initiatives for the girls youth program. Most notably, WLA is pleased to announce that Emily Mason, WHS Girls Varsity Assistant coach, has been engaged as Curriculum Director, Girls Youth Lacrosse.  In this role, which is new to the girls youth program, Emily will play a critical role in the development of our youth girls and will serve as a resource for all coaches and players within the program.  In conjunction with WHS Varsity Head Coach Meredith Meyran and the Girls Youth Committee, Emily will lead the development and implementation of a consistent curriculum for the girls program that permeates all grade levels and provides for age appropriate instruction.  Additionally, Emily will assist in creating a formal Girls Youth Lacrosse philosophy tied to the High School program, oversee our Winter Clinics, and conduct coaching clinics to educate our youth coaching staff on philosophy, curriculum and rules/safety.  The addition of this role is a continuation of our progress and evolution at the Girls Youth level, recognizing the changing needs of both the youth and High School players in Wilton.

Events and Programs:

For fall playing opportunities, we offered Girls Youth “Fun Nights” in mid-November under the lights at Lilly field, once field availability became available with fall sport seasons ending.  These sessions serve as a fun forum for girls in grades 5-8 to pick up their sticks, play with friends, rock out to the DJ and if lucky, take home great raffle prizes.  Separately, numerous girls in grades 5, 6 and 8 participated in an 8 v 8 girls jamboree hosted by the John Jay program in Cross River, NY.

Winter Clinics for girls in grades 1-8 start in December and run through February, focused on individual skill development. This year’s clinics will be held at Wilton Sports & Fitness under the direction of Emily Mason and supplemented by members of the WHS Girls Varsity team. These clinics promise to be fast paced, fun, and focused on the basic individual skills of the game which are so critical for all of our youth girls.  As everyone knows, in the game of lacrosse you can never be “too good” at catching, throwing, shooting or scooping ground balls.

As an added feature of our off-season winter offerings, we are finalizing details on 2-3 “Special Guest” clinics led by prominent college coaches.  These clinics will be a great opportunity to learn from some of the best in the world of women’s lacrosse, and I highly encourage all girls to attend.

As you can see, on the girls youth side of the WLA, we are very focused on providing high quality offseason opportunities for the girls to pick up their sticks, receive terrific coaching and most importantly, have fun!

Registration for the 2015 spring season opens on December 1st, and the spring season for youth begins March 23, 2015.
